Vegetable garden and building a community
Working as a team in the garden has so many positive effects as we realised this year preparing the vegetable garden at the Ecolodge and also a second one at Aruts place. It is fun, it gets the job done in just a few hours, it is encouraging and rewarding but its also about building a sharing community.
We rearranged the whole garden in fewer but longer lanes gaining a lot of space and we planted more than 1000 veggies!!! Tomatoes in 6 varieties, cucumbers and aubergines in 3 varieties, peppers in 6 varieties, courgettes, corn, beans and salads, basel, parsley and spearmint, flowers and herbs in between and lots more….
Thanks to Hydrousa project which is funding at the moment the Ecolodge garden we managed to buy special vermi-compost from worms, humus, organic fertilisers from sea weeds, fish and ECO packs of NPK that we used for improving the soil quality.
We are so thrilled to see the first crops to grow healthy and strong and we cant wait for the first harvest to come! We do have high expectations for this year which will also be quite labour intensive in monitoring and collecting the data to gain experience with all these very specialised inputs. However, this will happen once in the beginning and maintenance will be very low for the next years to come.
We also started a second communal garden at our friend Aruts where we made our own plants from seeds and where we will experiment with more special varieties to preserve the seeds.
The goal is to become self sufficient and through gardening build slowly a community that shares the same values and produces its own food to begin with, If we have higher yields than we can consume the rest will go to the local market!
